Calming Skincare Routine as of Late

As I’ve gotten older I feel like my skin has gotten more sensitive such that it will immediately tell me if something I ate agrees or disagrees with my body (fun…). Over the past year I’ve noticed that certain foods like red wine, curry, paprika, some fermented foods like kombucha, and black pepper (like a lot of it) will cause, what looks like, a mild skin reaction around my eyes and my skin will feel more inflamed. I’ve also noticed that whether or not I get a reaction and the severity of it will vary depending on my stress level and how much sleep I’ve been getting. High-stress and/or lack of sleep make my body more reactive which I think is probably true for most people.

After a bit of research and talking to my Mom who has been dealing with more aggressive skin reactions lately, I’ve more or less come to the conclusion that I have a mild histamine sensitivity. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure out if that is in fact it, but I feel like it is. It’s either that or related to SIBO or some other digestive issue that has been my radar to investigate as well. For those that are unfamiliar with histamine sensitivity and/or intolerance, you can read more about here and here (I found this article particularly clear and informative).

My point in sharing all of this is that when my skin does freak out, all I want are calming and soothing skincare products. It’s taken a bit, but I feel like I finally found the holy trinity of products that really help when my skin flares up. The below products combined with eliminating high histamine foods, drinking lots of water and getting better sleep always seems to do the trick.

As with everything on the internet – do your own research! I like to review the ingredients to make sure that there is nothing that will irritate my skin further.

Living Libations Best Skin Ever Sea Buckthorn Cleanser – I know I mention it all the time, but it’s because this cleanser is the best. Every time I stop using it and come back to it I wonder why I stopped in the first place. Full disclosure, it takes a bit longer than other cleansers that you can suds up and wash off, but it’s so worth it. Do give Danni Omari’s videos a watch – I use this method if I have makeup on and this method if I’m barefaced.

Dieux Skin Deliverance Serum – clinically tested and incredibly soothing. I’ve been using this on and off for a year or two now and always go back to it when my skin is irritated. Their encapsulated cannabinoid complex and water lily complex are the two main ingredients that tackle irritation, but there are a handful of other products that target fine lines and wrinkles.

True Botanicals Moisture Lock Overnight Mask – My Mom turned me on to this night time moisturizer. It really seals everything in! It’s rich and moisturizing, but incredibly lightweight. I only use this at night after using the above. During the day I use Moon Juice’s Cosmic Cream.
